Joanna Gair is Tasmania's top papermaker. Formerly the Director of Creative Paper Tasmania in Burnie, Joanna now works from her home studio, creating linen, rag and other papers using traditional and time consuming techniques.
Joanna has been working in paper making for twenty years. Interleaves will present her most current work, using techniques developed over the past few years. Joanna is greatly influenced by Tasmania’s native flora and landscape.
Joanna says of the exhibition:
“Tasmania has been a strong motivator during the preparation for this work. The proximity of water, the unique and abundant range of plants and the heroic landscape …all have contributed to the mood and tone of the work and have inspired even more experimentation than I usually embrace.
Themes within this work include the nobility of plants, paper’s own steeped-in-time traditions, the unspoken between the lines, the sheer joy of a garden, a collector’s rare specimen, Memento Mori.”
The exhibition is dedicated to Joanna’s mother-in-law Catherine Campbell Gair (nee Macleod) 1950-2009 who was a great supporter of Joanna’s work.
