Design Director
Conditions: Full-time 3 year contract
Hours: Full time
Salary: $60,000 package
The Design Director is responsible to the Board of the TWDC for:
• Implementing the Strategic Plan, following its vision, purpose and objectives and delivering its goals. These are outlined in the accompanying document.
• Oversighting all areas of TWDC activities. This includes working with the Business Manager on selection of staff, funding applications and acquittals and liaising with stakeholders.
• Supporting the design community by facilitating the Tasmanian Design Coalition and advocating its position through membership of national Boards and Committees.
• Developing and delivering an annual artistic program of exhibitions in accordance with the approved artistic rationale and on advice from the Exhibitions Advisory Panel, a proportion of these to be developed with the aim of promoting design through exhibition touring.
• Ongoing management of the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection, its display, maintenance and promotion. Delivering a Biennial Acquisitions Exhibition and facilitating the Acquisitions Advisory Panel in selecting new objects for the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection and in developing policies for the Collection.
• Supporting and providing information to the Board’s Advisory Committees in the development of plans and policies, Collection acquisition and exhibition selection.
• Developing and promoting Launceston as a centre for design, recognising and building on the design strengths of the University and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery as partners.
• Marketing and promoting the building, the exhibition and events programs, the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection, and maintaining positive public, community and media relations.
• Working with the Business and Development Manager in increasing the level of public and private sector income, including application and reporting processes and sponsor relationships.
Skills and Knowledge
The Design Director is expected to demonstrate:
• High level planning and development skills to implement the Strategic Plan, its vision, purpose, objectives goals.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the contemporary design industry at a local, national and international level.
• Knowledge of relevant funding streams, public and private and demonstrated success in securing funding from these sources.
• Highly developed interpersonal skills with proven strengths in written, oral and communication, negotiation and presentation skills and proven ability to manage effective relationships with Board members, staff, volunteers, sponsors and donors.
• Highly developed research and analysis skills and experience in presentation, applications and reporting.
• Proven ability to prioritise a high workload and juggle competing demands.
• Ability to work autonomously as part of a small team.
Terms of Offer
The position will be subject to a contract of employment that will cover:
Commencement date, duties, hours of employment, time in lieu arrangements, remuneration, superannuation, out-of-pocket expenses, annual leave, sick leave and other entitlements, confidentiality, termination, reporting lines, performance review and intention to renew.

Purpose
To contribute to the promotion of Tasmania as having one of the world’s most vibrant, innovative and interesting design cultures
Goals
G1 To develop international relationships in order to take Tasmanian design to the world.
G2 To take the lead role in the establishment of a coalition with representation from design organisations, design professionals and industry stakeholders, with a mission to facilitate advocacy, education, innovation and enhance commercialisation of Tasmanian design.
G3 To advocate to government and business leaders the strengths designers bring to cultural and commercial innovation, changing the way regions and states do business, transforming economies and developing regional competitiveness.
G4 To further engage design and arts practitioners through involvement in Advisory bodies such as an Exhibitions Advisory Panel, and the established Acquisitions Advisory Panel.
G5 To continue the development of the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection, using it as a unique and important tool in the understanding and marketing of Tasmanian design locally, nationally and internationally.
G6 To continue to develop and sustain national relationships through participation in synergistic national organisations, and involvement in forums promoting design innovation and education.
G7 To engage with the University of Tasmania School of Architecture + Design, the Australian School of Fine Furniture, the Centre for Furniture Design and the Timber Research Unit in the development of opportunities for students and design practitioners, and the promotion of Tasmania and Launceston as a centre for design.
G8 To increase visitors to the building through an exhibition program that exposes and extends the role and significance of design in all its forms, and by providing opportunities for attendance at a range of relevant activities including forums, workshops and activities that explore the world of design.
G9 To rename and rebrand the organisation to more clearly reflect its scope, purpose and objectives.
G10 To seek stable core funding arrangements, new sources of funding including grants and project funding, philanthropic funding, partnership with industry, and other revenue generation.
