Tasmanian Wood Design Collection Acquisitions Policy
October 2003
Amended November 2004, February 2005, December 2009
Preamble
The Tasmanian Wood Design Collection (TWDC) is an independent, not for profit collection of contemporary Tasmanian wood design. It is a unique and important tool in the understanding and marketing of Tasmanian design locally, nationally and internationally.
The TWDC makes a central contribution to the delivery of its parent organisation’s overall Mission (‘for Tasmania to be recognised globally as a place of design excellence’) and Vision (‘To contribute to the promotion of Tasmania as having one of the world’s most vibrant, innovative and interesting design cultures’).
This Acquisitions Policy states the terms under which an item may be accessioned to, or deaccessioned from, the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection.
Acquisition Criteria
In order to be considered for acquisition, an item must:
• Have relevance to the stated Mission and Vision of the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection;
• Be of the highest quality;
• Be an example of innovative contemporary design at the time of its production or acquisition;
• Be made in Tasmania by a resident of Tasmania;
• Use wood as a significant feature
Sources of Acquisition
• Items for acquisition may be sourced in the following ways:
• As the end result of the Biennial acquisitive process
• By commission to the maker
• By purchase
• By gift or bequest.
Items for acquisition through these means must then be assessed in accordance with the terms of the Acquisitions Policy and formally accessioned by the Board.
Process of Accession
An item will formally be accessioned to the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection when it conforms to the Acquisitions Policy and when:
• The Acquisitions Advisory Panel makes a recommendation to the Board to acquire the item AND
• The Board moves to support the recommendation.
In assessing the recommendation of the Acquisitions Advisory Panel, the Board should consider whether the proposed acquisition is in accordance with the Acquisitions Policy and the Goals and Objectives of the Collection.
Location
Items will be based at the premises of the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection at the Design Centre in Tamar Street, Launceston. Items may leave the premises on loan or for the purpose of touring at the discretion of the curator and as long as such loans or tours conform with the stated parameters of the Goals and Objectives of the Collection and any other relevant policies.
De-accessions
Items may be de-accessioned from the Collection if and only if the Acquisitions Advisory Panel and the Board agree that the item is no longer of any value to the Collection either presently or in the future.
An item will be formally de-accessioned from the Tasmanian Wood Design Collection when:
• The Acquisitions Advisory Panel makes a recommendation to the Board to de-accession the item AND
• The Board moves to support the recommendation.
In assessing the recommendation of the Acquisitions Advisory Panel, the Board should consider carefully whether the de-accession is necessary to maintain the Collection at the standard consistent with its stated Goals and Objectives.
There is to be a 6 month minimum ‘cooling off’ period between the time at which the decision is first made to deaccession an item, and the time at which that item is deaccessioned. |
